Wolves win opener
The St. Catharines Club Roma Wolves couldn’t have asked for a better start.
The expansion franchise debuted in the League1 Ontario Men’s Premier Division with a 2-0 win over Toronto FC4 at the BMO Training Ground and Academy Saturday.
“Being on the field for the first time was kind of exciting and playing against some really good players, it was exciting for us to gel together,” Roma director of operations Carmine Provenzano said. “We struggled and had some successes.
“It was an up and down type of roller coaster for us and we’re happy to get the win for sure. As a new team, three points is what we’re looking for.”
Roma scored twice in the first half to take a quick 2-0 lead on goals by midfielder Oti Frigole, who scored on an excellent strike, followed by a shot just inside the post by Luca Danesi from about 18 yards out.
“It kind of got a little windier — the wind played some tricks on us in the second half — we were going against it so it was hard to mount an attack,” Provenzano said. “I give Toronto credit. They did their best to get back into the game. The pressed us a little more than I think they were comfortable with, but we persevered.”
Provenzano said the Wolves did a solid job on defence.
“We were not really in any danger of them scoring,” he said. “Defensively, we were really, really good. We clogged up the middle. There was never a doubt we weren’t going to win the game but we would have liked to get the next goal, but we just couldn’t do it.”
Carson Provenzano was tested only once or twice and earned the shutout in goal.
The Wolves play Blue Devils FC at St. Thomas Aquinas Field Saturday at 4 p.m.
Roma has four home games slated, beginning Friday Aug. 6 at 8:45 p.m. versus Vaughan Azzurri.
